The first chess opening mentioned in this book is the Danish Gambit and it's a good embodiment of the chess in this book.
Exciting but flawed.
I'm fully aware that Ali Hazelwood set out to write a love story and not an endgame manual but I found it difficult to look past certain aspects. Some of the abilities could have been toned down a bit and the book would have still had the same impact in my opinion.
That said, the love story was clichéd but fun. I really liked Ali Hazelwood's writing style and, once I tuned in to it, I flew through this book.
The best part of this book is that it made me want to play more chess. I hope this has the desired effect in diversifying the chess world.
